We went to Paris and London from August 31 to September 12 as our 10th wedding anniversary celebration. Here are the best of our pictures.

Pues nos fuimos a Paris y Londres del 31 de agosto al 12 de septiembre, para celebrar nuestros 10 anos de casados. Aqui estan las mejores fotos que tomamos.

Thursday, August 31/Jueves 31 de agosto
We left KC on Thursday around noon. We flew to New York and from there to Paris. We arrived around 11 am of Friday(but for us it was like 4 am).

Salimos de Kansas City el jueves como al medio dia, llegamos a Nueva York, y de ahi salimos directo a Paris, a donde llegamos a las 11 de la manana del viernes, pero para nosotros eran como las 4 de la manana.

Friday, September 1/Viernes 1 de septiembre
Upon landing, our first culture shock experience was to get tickets to the Metro. At the airport there were ticket-dispensing machines (all in French) in which we tried to get tickets using our credit cards and bills we had withdrawn from an ATM. We were unsuccessful, as many other tourists around us. Finally, a clerk came and told us (in French) that the machines accepted coins only and she showed us where to change bills for coins. After that, it was piece of cake and we took the rapid train to the city. After checking-in (in English), Karla took a nap while Hector walked around the hotel and went to a cafe. We got together for dinner at Cafe Fleur in Ile St. Louis. After dinner, we walked around Notre Dame and the Latin Quarter.

The Seine River runs across Paris, with two isles in the middle, Ile de la Cite and Ile St.Louis; Notre Dame is in Ile St. Louis, and a few block from our hotel, Paris-Rivoli.

En cuanto llegamos al aeropuerto tuvimos nuestra primera dificultad con el idioma cuando quisimos comprar boletos para el metro en las maquinitas, que solo tenian frances. Despues de varios intentos fallidos queriendo usar nuestras tarjetas de credito y billetes que habiamos sacado del ATM, una empleada llego a decirnos, en frances, que las maquinas solo aceptaban monedas. Nos mostro donde cambiar los billetes, y despues de eso, tomamos el tren rapido a la ciudad. Llegamos a nuestro hotel, Karla se durmio una siesta, Hector se salio a caminar cerca del hotel y a un cafe, y nos vimos para la cena en un restaurante cercano, en la isla San Luis. Despues de cenar caminamos por la famosa iglesia de Notre Dame (nuestra senora) y por el cuarto latino.

El rio Siena corre por en medio de Paris, dividiendolo en dos, y hay dos islas en el rio, la Ile de la Cite (de la ciudad) y la Ile St. Louis (San Luis); la iglesia de Notre Dame esta en la San Luis, a unas cuadras de nuestro hotel, Paris-Rivoli.

Saturday, September 2/Sabado 2 de septiembre
We found a market close to the hotel where Parisians were buying their meats, seafood, veggies, fruits, breads, and wines for the week. We walked around and by signs and gestures we bought a half a slab of BBQ ribs, some potatoes, and bread, and had lunch sitting on a bench.

After that, we walked on Rue de Rivoli, a main street where our hotel is located, until we reached the Louvre, the Jardin des Tuleries next to it, and Place de la Concorde, where we rested and had a mango sorbet. We kept walking through Champs Elysees, had an expresso, reached the Arc de Triomphe and spent some time in there. After that we walked towards Trocadero, where we saw the Tour Eiffel and had dinner. We had walked across the whole city and were exhausted. We took a bus and went back to the hotel.

Nos hallamos de casualidad un mercado donde los parisinos hacen sus compras (pescado, mariscos, carnes, frutas, verduras, pan y vinos), y a senas y gestos compramos unas costillitas, papas y pan, y nos sentamos a lonchar en una banca.

Despues de eso, caminamos por la misma calle del hotel, Rue de Rivoli, y pasamos por el museo del Luvre, los jardines de las Tullerias, y la Plaza de la Concordia, donde nos detuvimos a descansar y a comer una nieve de mango. Le seguimos caminando hacia los campos Eliseos (donde acaba el Tour de France), paramos en un cafe por unos expressos, y llegamos al Arco del Triunfo. Luego de estar alli un buen rato nos fuimos a Trocadero donde esta la Torre Eiffel. Cenamos en un restaurante por ahi y tomamos un camion de regreso al hotel.

Sunday, September 3/Domingo 3 de septiembre
On our way to the Louvre we found a cafe/bar where we had a cheese sandwich and a expresso for breakfast (the cheese sandwich was a baguette with emmental cheese, no mustard, no veggies, nothing else... and it was delicious!) We spent some hours at the Louvre but saw only a fraction of it. The Louvre is the size of two football fields, has three wings and fours floors. In the evening we went to the Latin Quarter (a neighborhood full of restaurants, shops, students, night life, kind of like Westport) for dinner. On our way back to the hotel we stopped at the square outside Notre Dame, where we saw a show with fire jugglers and listened to a guy playing guitar.

De ida al museo del Luvre desayunamos en un cafe. Nos dieron un sandwich de queso que nomas tenia pan frances y queso fuerte, sin nada mas, ni mayonesa, y que estaba riquisimo. Pasamos varias horas en el museo y apenas vimos un cachito, pues es enorme; es del tamano de dos campos de futbol americano, con tres edificios de cuatro pisos cada uno. En la noche nos fuimos a cenar al cuarto latino, un barrio con muchos restaurantes, tiendas, estudiantes y bares. De regreso paramos en el jardin afuera de Notre Dame, donde habia malabaristas y un tipo tocando la guitarra.

Monday, September 4/Lunes 4 de septiembre
We went to Notre Dame, up the more than 200 steps to see the gargoyles, the chimeras, and the city. It was amazing! (just see the pictures). After that, we walked to Ile St. Louis for some recommended sorbert, to Bertillion. We weren't dissappointed. After walking in the isle, we took a cruise on the Seine River, so we had the opportunity to see a lot of buildings from the river, such as Notre Dame, the Louvre, Hotel de Ville, La Concergerie, and the Eiffel Tower. We had a wonderful dinner at a small restaurant behind Saint Gervais church.

By then we had learned that the thing to do in the mornings was to get an expresso in a cafe, especially inside the bar, which is way cheaper than in the tables outside, and then a croissant or other pastry at a Pattiserie. Then, for lunch and dinner, most restaurants (cafes, really) offer fix price menus, so you can choose the 10Euro, 15Euro or 20Euro menu and it includes an appetizer, an entree and dessert for the same price of one entree a la carte. We also found that wine was very cheap and very good everywhere, and that we need to order tap water or they bring you expensive Perrier water. One more thing was that when you order a coffee, you get an expresso and it is wonderful. And that for dinner, they bring you coffee after dessert, not with it. And you don't tip. You may leave some coins, like 1 or 2 Euros for a dinner of 50Euros.

Nos fuimos a la iglesia de Notre Dame y subimos los mas de 200 escalones a la punta a ver las gargolas y a ciudad desde arriba; nomas vean las fotos para que se den un quemon! Despues de ahi caminamos por la isla a buscar unas nieves de agua muy recomendadas. Luego tomamos un paseo en lancha por el rio Siena, desde donde vimos muchos edificios desde el lado del rio: Notre Dame, el Louvre, la Concergeria, Hotel de Ville y la torre Eiffel. Cenamos en un restaurantito en un andador atras del templo San Gervais.

Ya para entonces habiamos aprendido que en la manana hay que tomarse un cafe expresso adentro del cafe para que salga mas barato que si te lo tomas en las mesitas de afuera, y que compras el cuernito u otro pan dulce en la panaderia. Ademas, que para el lunch y la cena, la mayoria de los restaurantes (cafes) ofrecen menus de precio fijo, como de 10, 15 o 20 Euros, que incluyen botana, plato fuerte y postre, y sale mas barato que pedir a la carta. Ademas, que el vino es baratisimo y muy rico, y que hay que pedir agua de la llave (que se puede tomar) en lugar de agua embotellada, que sale carisima. Cuando uno ordena cafe te dan expresso y el cafe se sirve despues del postre, no al mismo tiempo. Y no se deja propina, si acaso unas monedas, por ejemplo, 1 o2 Euros por una cuenta de 50 Euros.

Tuesday, September 5/Martes 5 de septiembre
We spent the day on two museums: Orsay and Rodin. Musee D'Orsay houses only impressionists works such as Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Touluse-Lautrec, Degas, Rodin, and even Picasso. After the Louvre, we thought we wouldn't like this museum as much but it was mind-blowing. We had lunch there and we spent the afternoon in nearby Musee Rodin, where we saw two Thinkers, two Gates of Hell and one Kiss among many other of his works. After that, we walked to Hotel Des Invalides, where Napoleon's tomb is.

Hector got some prosciutto, salami, cheese, bread, and wine, and we had dinner by the terrace of our room.

Nos pasamos el dia en dos museos: el Orsay y el Rodin. En el Orsay hay solo obras de impresionistas como Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Touluse-Lautrec, Degas, Rodin y Picasso. Creimos que despues del Louvre ya no nos impresionaria un museo tanto, pero como eran artistas tan chidos, nos encanto. Lonchamos ahi y nos pasamos la tarde en el museo Rodin, un escultor famoso, donde vimos muchas de sus obras, incluyendo dos Pensadores, dos Puertas del Infierno, y uno de El Beso. Despues de eso, nos fuimos al Jardin y palacio des Invalides, donde esta la tumba de Napoleon.

Hector compro jamon serrano, salami, quesos, pan y vino, y cenamos junto a la terraza de nuestro cuarto.

Wednesday, September 6/Miercoles 6 de septiembre
Hector went to Mont Parnasse, Jardin du Luxembourg and the Pantheon while Karla slept. Together we went to Mont Mantre, where Sacre Cour is. Hector went up the more than 500 steps to the tower, Karla went to the shops behind the church. On our way back we walked until we saw the Moulin Rouge

Hector se fue a Mont Parnasse, los Jardines de Luxemburgo y el Panteon mientras Karla durmio. Juntos nos fuimos a Mont Mantre, donde esta el templo de Sacre Cour (Sagrado Corazon). Hector subio los mas de 500 escalones a la torre mientras Karla bobeaba en las tiendas atras del templo. Caminamos por la ciudad hasta ver el Molino Rojo (Moulin Rouge).

Thursday, September 7/Jueves 7 de septiembre
We left the hotel and took the "chunnel" train to London, where we arrived at 11 am. We took the metro (the Tube or Underground) to our hotel and after checking in, we went to see the Tower Bridge and spent the rest of the day at the Tower of London, just a few blocks from our hotel. We had Indian food for dinner.

Dejamos nuestro hotel en la manana y tomamos el tren rapido a Londres. Llegando tomamos en metro al hotel y de ahi nos fuimos a ver el puente de la torre (Tower Bridge) y pasamos el resto del dia en la Torre de Londres, a unas cuadras del hotel. Cenamos comida Indu.

Friday, September 8/Viernes 8 de septiembre
We took the subway to Westminster, had tea and a croissant for breakfast and admired the Big Ben at the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey next to it, and crossed the Westminster Bridge to see the whole building from across the Thames River. We also saw the London Eye, a huge caroussel that looks like a bike wheel. From there we walked to Trafalgar Square, then to Lincester Square, where we got half-price tickets to see the Blue Man Group. We had lunch (Hector got fish and chips, Karla got sausage on mashed potatoes and gravy, with beer) at Saint James' Pub. From there we walked to Picadilly Square, arrived to Saint James's Park (kind of like NY's Central Park), where Buckingham Palace and the Queen Victoria Memorial are. After seeing the amazing Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace seemed almost plain. After resting at the park, we took the subway back to the hotel and that evening we went to the New Theatre for the show. We had a tray of cheese and meats with beer at ?LowLander Pub.

Tomamos el metro a Westminster, desayunamos unos cuernitos con te, y admiramos al Big Ben en las Casas del Parlamento, junto al Westminster Abbey. Cruzamos un puente para ver el edificio desde el otro lado del rio Tames, desde donde tambien vimos al Ojo de Londres, una rueda de la fortuna gigante que parece una rueda de bici, desde donde se aprecia toda la ciudad. De ahi caminamos a varias placitas: Trafalgar, Lincester, y Picadilly. Compramos boletos rebajados a un show en la noche, lonchamos en un bar comida tradicional (pescado frito con papas fritas y chorizo con pure de papas, con cerveza). De ahi caminamos al Parque James, enorme, como el Central Park de Nueva York, donde se encuentra el Palacio de Buckingham y el Memorial a la Reina Victoria. Despues de las Casas del Parlamento, el Palacio de Buckingham se veia simplon. Descansamos en el parque y regresamos en metro a descansar al hotel. En la noche fuimos a ver al Blue Man Group al Teatro Nuevo (es el mismo grupo que Karla habia visto en Chicago). Cenamos en un bar una tablita de quesos y carnes con cerveza.

Saturday, September 9/Sabado 9 de septiembre
We left the hotel in the morning and took the subway to Saint Paul's Cathedral and the Millenium Bridge. We crossed the bridge and had beakfast outdoors on a cafe next to the Tate Museum and the river (we shared a full English breakfast: egg, sausage, bacon, portobella mushroom, beans with tomato, toast, and a tea and an expresso). After breakfast we went to the Tate Modern Museum, where we saw works by Rothko, Dali, Miro, Calder, Monet, etc.

We rode in a double decker to Waterloo Station, where we took the "chunnel" back to Paris. After checking in again at our hotel, we went out looking for a place with jazz at Saint Germain De Press. The whole area was too expensive and we decided to walked until we found a busy, folkloric street full of restaurants. After dinner we kept walking, saw The Sorbonne (Paris University), back to Saint Michael, the Latin Quarter and Notre Dame, where Hector was pulled into a street show, being the guy that says "Action, take 3" in French. I didn't have my camera with me, so we don't have pictures :(
We called Karla's mom, since it was her birthday.

Salimos del hotel y nos fuimos en metro a la Catedral de San Paul y al Puente del Milenio. Cruzamos el puente y desayunamos en un restaurante al aire libre, junto al rio. Compartimos un desayuno ingles: huevo estrellado con tocino y chorizo, champinon y frijoles en tomate, pan tostado, te y un expresso. Despues nos fuimos al Museo Tate Moderno, donde pasamos unas horas.

Saliendo de ahi nos fuimos en un camion double decker a la estacion del metro Waterloo, desde donde salimos en el tren rapido de regreso a Paris. Luego de agarrar otro cuarto en el mismo hotel nos salimos a buscar un lugar con musica de jazz. Luego de caminar un buen por el barrio popof de San German de Press decidimos mejor irnos a un barrio mas agradable, donde hallamos un buen restaurante y cenamos. Despues de la cena caminamos hacia San Miguel y el barrio Latino, vimos la Sorbona (la Universidad de Paris) y a Notre Dame, a donde Hector lo agarraron en uno de esos shows callejeros y lo pusieron a actuar del tipo que dice "accion, toma 2", en frances... como no llevaba la camara, no tengo fotos de eso. Ese dia fue el cumpleanos de la mama de Karla, asi que le hablamos por telefono.

Sunday, September 10/Domingo 10 de septiembre
We went back to the Louvre. We saw Louvre Medieval, Iran, Levanto, Mesopotamia and French sculptures. We had a lovely lunch of cheese and wine at the terrace of the Louvre overlooking the Pyramid, the building and statues.

After some rest at the hotel, we walked around the Marais, had a falafel sandwich to go on one of the many shops around there, got used clothing at a vintage shop, got close to Place de la Bastille, and Saint Paul's church.

Regresamos al Louvre y vimos la historia medieval del museo, exposiciones de Iran, Mesopotamia, Levanto, y esculturas francesas. Lonchamos quesos y vino en la terraza del Louvre, viendo la piramide, el edificio y estatuas.

Luego de descansar un rato en el hotel caminamos por el barrio del Marais, donde cenamos un sandiwch de falafel (comida mediterranea) en la calle, entramos a un lugar de ropa de segunda mano, pasamos cerca de la plaza de la Bastilla y de la iglesia de San Pablo.

Monday, September 11/Lunes 11 de septiembre
We woke up without a plan. We walked to Ile St. Louis to have breakfast (omelet, bread and expressos), walked around the Seine, the Latin Quarter, went into some bookstores, saw the Sorbonne again (but we couldn't get in). We had cheese and wine for lunch and a cheese and escargot, meat tray with wine for dinner.

Nos levantamos sin un plan de que hacer. Desayunamos un omelet, pan y expressos en la Isla San Luis. Caminamos por el rio Siena, el cuarto Latino, vimos la Sorbona de nuevo (pero no nos dejaron entrar). Lonchamos quesos con vino y cenamos caracoles, quesos, carnes y vino.

Tuesday, September 12/Martes 12 de septiembre
We woke up, had breakfast at the hotel and waited for a cab to take us to the airport. We had a 10 and a half hour flight to Houston that got delayed one hour. In Houston we had to rebook our flight since we lost it. We arrived at KC round 9:30 pm (for us it was like 4:30 am, almost 20 hours after we left Paris).

Billo, Hector's dad, had volunteer to house- and petsit while we were gone. The big surprise was that Silvia, Hector's mom, reached him at KC while we were gone. We found out at the airport, where they greeted us.

Nos levantamos, desayunamos en el hotel y esperamos a un taxi que nos llevara al aeropuerto. Tuvimos un vuelo de 10 y media horas a Houston, Texas, que se retraso una hora, y perdimos nuestro segundo vuelo, asi que tuvimos que tomar uno mas tarde. Llegamos a Kansas City a las 9:30 pm (que para nosotros eran como las 4:30 am, a casi 20 horas de haber salido de Paris).

Billo, el papa de Hector, se habia ofrecido a cuidar la casa y los perros durante nuestras vacaciones y la sorpresota fue que Silvia lo alcanzo mientras nosotros no estabamos, y nos enteramos hasta que la vimos en el aeropuerto cuando nos recogieron.
